Long tattoo sessions

Let's say you want your arm fully sleeved (which means, if you don't know, having your entire arm tattooed). It's highly improbable that you'll do it all at once. Even if you could stand it, the tattooist probably can't (though s/he may not admit that).

Common sense alone says "do it in sessions". How long should a session be? Well, there's two people involved in this activity, and it's important that you let the tattooist work in the way they like. If your tattooist says they won't tattoo for more than three hours, respect that. If they say they want to tattoo you for twelve hours and you think you can't handle it, respect yourself and find someone else.

In my opinion, a four to six hour stretch of tattooing is the longest amount of time that a sitting should be, for both the tattooee and the tattooist. Of course, there are always exceptions. I was at a convention once where a woman got a tattoo that took 13 hours (and the tattooist was working hard and fast). When they were done, they both looked halfway dead. So, yeah, if you want to get tattooed by someone at a convention or when you're visiting somewhere far from home, the ordinary rules get thrown out the window.

But optimally, four to six hours is the limit. For one thing, you, as the person being tattooed, is going to run out of adrenaline and all the lovely chemicals the brain makes that are "natural opiates" which keep you from feeling pain clearly. When tattooing, I noticed that the average person runs out of steam at about 3 1/2 hours. For some people, it takes less time and, of course, others can go on and on and on. But at some point, it starts to really hurt, and I mean it. Tattooists joke about the fact that even the most hardass tat addict is gonna feel like that damned paper towel with the soothing cool water on it suddenly feels like coarse grain sand paper. And around that time, most people start to bleed more, so tattooing them becomes more difficult.

If you got lost in my wordiness, I had written that this takes four to six hours, but trutfhfully, four hours is most peoples' limit.

After four to six hours, you will probably also be shaky, cold, tired and in need of a good meal, a beer and a lot of sleep. I'm not kidding, but after a really long tattoo session, you are not fit to drive. If you must, sit yourself down and eat some red meat first.

Note: If you are paying your tattooist by the hour instead of by the piece, give them a tip. Even though they may be charging a good sum per hour, tattooists make more money doing small pieces with set prices. When they're working by the hour, you are usually getting a good deal. The tattooist is psyched and they (mostly) tend to work fast under these conditions. So, be a good sport and give 'em a tip.

Ok so I have a question. I found an awesome artist and absolutely love all of her work. I am flying out to see her next month to get a 3/4 sleeve done. She has blocked a 3 day appointment for me, roughly 8 hrs a day. She has a studio in the country and has a good approach to pain management, so she says. I heard she has a light hand, works in small areas, uses a numbing agent and recommends taking ibprofen. I have only sat 3 hours before with my back. I am still awaiting her phone call to work on the concept drawing, but it seem like she has done this before. Have you heard of so much work in such a short period of time? Can this be done?! I am mentally preparing myself and have a high tolerance for pain. We will eventually have a second meeting for a second pass to develop the design further. Any thoughts?

Lisa, I thought I took this blog down, so I guess it's true that you can't remove anything from the Web.
Here's my take on a three-day session and numbing agents:
1. Is she using Emla cream? This is the most commonly used numbing agent. It does indeed numb the skin. The skin needs to be "opened up" first, so you will feel the beginning of the session. Tattoos done with numbing agents are known to heal out less predictably. This is a fact, though I would imagine that a tattooist very experienced in using this takes that into account. But from my training in cosmetic tattoo work, it is assumed that a touch-up is needed when numbing agents are used. I hate to say this, but any tattooist who says otherwise, well. . .I'm not sure what to think.
2. Ask the tattooist if she will be working on different areas each day. If she is going to go back into an area that's already been tattooed on day 1 or 2, your skin has already started healing. This is not good. There is always a risk of scarring when the skin is overworked.
3. The most experienced tattooist I know, who is world-renowned, and uses Emla cream when needed, won't do more than a two day sitting. It won't kill you to do it, but you will probably not feel well. Make sure you eat very well. Include lots of protein. Limit or eliminate your alcohol intake. Take multi-vitamins or you might want to try "Rescue Remedy" (found in health food stores).

Even if you can't feel it, three days of poking holes in your body is going to put your body into a state of mild shock.

I hope you've researched this tattoo artist very, very well. If you care to e-mail with the artist's name, feel free. julesinrose@gmail.com

One of the most informative blogs. I have done 8 hour sessions with numbing gels and some ppl are fully sleep for 6 of the hours ....while others are in pain all together. I have noticed longer sessions tend to heal diff than short sessions. I think the body is just pissed by hour 4 and ready to give out. People are very shakey by then. I definitely think that being tattooed everyday for 8 hours is not good for you. But I donot know your design so it is possible as long as she doesnt go over already tattooed skin. Goodluck.

I had a tattoo done yesterday that took 3 and a half hours. I ran out of the good chemicals and started to hurt like hell. I got really cold, started shaking and noticed that I hurt all over. When I got home, I had eat a ton, jump under the covers, put a heating pad under the covers and drink a lot of water. I will never sit that long again. I think 2 hours is a good limit.

I had a new tattoo today and was discussing with my tattoo artist why I always get cold, particularly my hands and feet while I'm having it done. He said a lot of people do but we don't know why! Any thoughts? Chelle x

I just sat for 5.5 hours and I have to say it's taking longer for me to heal than normal...I also got very cold and super tired even with dozing off and on...I have a very high pain tolerance infact I love the feeling of being tattooed and I tapped out. My tattoo isn't finished yet but I sure was! Good luck!

Just did 3.5 hour session, longest I've done most people only can go about 2 hours from what I've seen... Didn't get cold or shakes but took b complex magnesium and zinc with a good meal so that helped bunch... Took a break in between each hour aswel, Pain wasn't an issue for me got my piece done inner forearm from elbow to wrist. Not finished yet going back in a few days, I say listen to your body of your questioning whether to continue you should just stop and break it into sessions no use in pushing the limits and create more harm as the body will not heal properly and will take longer

im a tattoo artist in texas, and i would like to remind all that 2-3 hrs. per session is optimal. because after such the skin is inflamed and swollen, and will reject ink...

This is just my opinion, based on a medical background as an EMT. I am guessing that your limbs go cold, hands, feet, arms, legs, maybe even your ears, nose. This sounds a lot like psychosomatic (don't worry, not crazy psycho) shock. Based on anxiety from being tattooed, your mind begins to protect the core, discarding your extremities as expendable. This is probably more common than people realize, and usually it will terminate a session immediately. You seem to have a very unusual mild form. Others will turn green or pale, eyes roll up, pass out and maybe even vomit.

I would advice working on relaxation before, and during the work. Breathing, which we regularly ignore, is paramount. Take in slow deep breathes, hold it for several seconds, then release it slowly. Repeat.

I've just done 2 X 7 hour stints went through the same as others have commented feeling cold unwell and very tired I didn't have the numbing cream man I wish I did I'm diabetic and my blood sugars went up to 24 I won't be going that long again

Just an update to my post below - I did end up sitting for 3 whole days at Hyperspace studios, a solid 27 hours. I sat like a champ but it was exhausting and my body broke down after I flew back home and I got strip throat. That was in 09, these days my artist only does 2 day sessions, and I've had 3 of those since. After about 4 hours or so we usually use a little Bactine. My arms have healed great. I have both sleeves done now, and in my option arms are pretty easy, I could never more that 3 on my back.

I just had a 7 hour session and my fingers felt like ice cubes at about the six hour my anxiety was through the roof seconds turn into min and minutes into hours. I have a very high pain tolerance but that was he'll twords the end and it didn't help the last part was my armpit. But I did finish the half sleeve and it looks great. If u are going to do it bring a I pad watch movies talk as much as u can and relax. If nothing takes your mind off of it I would end the session.

I'm booked in for a 7 hour session next weekend. It will be my first tattoo (and a half-sleeve). I was pretty apprehensive at booking a day session, however the booker / reception guy at the studio told me not to worry and I'd be fine, but I have just mentioned it to a few people and they say there is no way I should be doing this. I'm wondering if I should call the tattoo studio and ask if I can reduce the booking and split it into even more smaller sessions (it does mean a lot of travel though as the tattooist is in a different city). I have had a lot of conflicting advice and I don't want to end up being charged for a days work and not being able to manage a day, plus I don't want to put myself in a bad situation. Any advice?

I've just finished my half sleeve tattoo in one session for 9 and half hours with lots of details last Saturday from 2pm to 11:30pm. It wasn't very pleasant experience after half way through. I started getting cold, a little bit shaking, very thirsty and hungry. But we took 3 short breaks during this long session. I had some tea, bananas, chocolate bars and an and energy drink. It definitely made me feel better for a short while. But the amount of the pain I've been through was unbelievable. So I don't really suggest people do any longer than 4 hours session.

Who is the artist? Just curious :)
I think you'll be okay, just take (and bring) a couple ibuprofen for swelling, have a hearty meal, drink plenty of water and bring snacks. I have to travel for my artist too so sit for multiple days. Not everyone has the convince of a local artist. Full days can be exhausting, but the payoff is worth it. I hate having unfinished work.

Glad this thread is going on recently -- I just finsihed my 2nd 6 hour session on a piece and while the whole thing didnt feel great, the last hour was something different. I wasnt cold or shakey, but I started to get pissed at everything around me because the pain was so high. I think 6 hr session is definitely doable, but just be prepared to get mentally tough for that last 2 hrs because you are on a different planet. Good luck but the sitting was definitely worth it!!

Just added some more work to my sleeve today. Took around the 4 hour mark and by the end i was seriously feeling the burn. I had uncontrollable shaking in my arm and felt cold and unwell, came home had some food/water and rested for a couple of hours. Feeling alot better now and kinda glad i did the 4 hours, no way would i do 6 or 7 thats insane

Had a four hour tattoo on forearm, everything was fine until the last hour when the pain became almost unbearable. This could be down to my fault in not having a lot to eat.

Anyway got home late evening and halfway through having something to eat I had rush to toilet with feeling seriously sick. I was freezing cold with sweat pouring off me. I crawled into bed and spent two hours dozing and still being freezing cold. I got up and drank numerous cups of tea then went back to bed.

I'm fine this morning just a bit tired. I'm now confused as to how to look after the tattoo as my artist has told me to clean it three times a day, apply Bepanthen ointment and wrap with clingfilm. However, reading forums people say oh don't do that whilst others say that's what you should do...it's def arrrggh.

I just did a 14 hour back session and in all honesty it was very painful. There were maybe three times where it became a little painful but it could have been because the area. Yes we did a couple short breaks during the 14 hours but it was necessary for the artist and myself. I had my tattoo done on two hours rest and hadn't ate all day. About 15 minutes left of the session I became a little exhausted and nauseated but it was due to not eating and lack of sleep. I ate some chocolate and took about a 15 minute break then left fine. I continued to finish my tattoo and had another piece I wanted done and was ready but my artist was exhausted himself. I look forward to my next session. I believe in relaxing and proper breathing. If you do this you should be just fine. Also hydrate your body before you begin. My next piece shouldn't exceed 6-7 hours so it will be a walk in the park.

Have done many 7 hours sessions on my back and multiple 8-10 hour sessions on various body parts at conventions with various artists. I can attest to the tattoo flu on very long sessions feel worn down achy and even that sick feeling at times. Eating and rest is the only thing that helps. As for getting cold while being tattooed, a wonderful artist named Russ Abbott gave me the idea of using a heating pad on long tattoo sessions under you torso and I must tell you I now travel with one in my bag to every tattoo session I get! Might not use it be you won't see me shivering in a chair at some convention at 10 at night ever again!:-).

I did 6 and half hours last night. And that's the longest I've ever had done. I'm no rookie getting tats but that was the most painful at the end and it felt like my hip was being blow torched for hours! Is this pain normal I must ask?

Did a 10 hour sitting the other day, my longest before that was 4 hours. We would have broken it down but I was in from out of town and couldn't come back for months. We were planning on about 6 hours. I was good until the last hour, that one was gritting my teeth as he went over putting in the fine details. Was it worth it? Hell yeah, I got an awesome piece. Will I do it again? Hell no, I'll schedule it for multiple sessions. My artist was shocked when I handed him a tip on top of the $1400 fee, but he busted his ass giving me some great art

Just had 6 hours on my ribs / side .... and have to say upto the first half I was full of beans ... chatting , joking ... joining in on the banter in the studio .... at about 3 hours in my artist said he wanted a cuppa .... so I took a smoke , took account of the last few hours and realised what a buzz I was on .... went back in killing DNA back down to earth ..... got comfy back on my bed and offered myself up ......... DAMN !!!! Taking a break was the worst thing I could have done !!!! The pain went through the roof ..... we worked out the most painful spot was the bottom rib !!! Maybe I've got less chub on that .... but damn !!! I still laughed along and tried joining in , but the next 3 hours were a heck of a lot longer than the first 3

Like others have said , I'd have hated going home half done ... one of the girls looked at me and my artist at the end and said we both looked like we need a hug

As this was my first piece ... I know better for next time to divi it up if it's gonna be another long one

I just did 5 hours and it was only in the last hour it really started hurting. Although when I finally got home, I got a headache, stomach pains and naturally my arm was aching like hell!

I had a tattoo done today and was having a session for 4hrs but it wasnt quite finished so ended up on 5hr session that's the longest I've ever sat as I havn't had many tattoos but I only felt cold in the first hr of my session I'm guessing it was party to do with the area of my tattoo... I was very lucky as I had a amazing tattoo Artis who did an amazing job! Just like the above I do have a headache but I had to drive 14miles to and from which isn't far but far enough!

Had my back done, 5 hours yesterday. It hurt but was tolerable for the first 4.5 hours that last 30 minutes he hit a spot opposite side of my sternum and to the right... it felt like someone stabbed me with a knife in the sternum. At first I thought it was my bra that I was laying on so I moved it but it was definitely the spot he was tattooing. At that point I was about done. Couldn't control my relaxed breathing I had going on and my body tensed up so the pain got worse. I still have 3/4s of the way to go. But now I'm mentally freaked out. I'm thinking maybe doing 3 hour sessions from here on out. I have to go back in 1 week. But any advice on how to get mentally prepared again? I know the pain will be ten times worse if I keep thinking about how bad that hurt.

I'm now at 30 hours on my back ... 3 ten hour sessions ... 1st was cool nothing in the following days .... 2nd I had what was the worst draining flu symptoms I've ever felt for maybe a week after ...... perhaps it was the flu ???

The 3rd which was about a month after the second was a heavy session ..... but nothing after ... right as rain

Had ribs done about 6 months ago , and it's 2 different pains , two different types of session

Always worth it whatever the outcome .... it's not like anyone asked me to do it ....

LOVE all the ink I've got now ..... I might have found myself a mild addiction 😃

I did a full sleeve (first tattoo) in 2 sits 10hrs first day and 6 hrs detail and shading 6 days later. Good artist and high pain tolerance goes a long ways. After 10hr session went home and started cooking for party next day, took a 2hr nap in there somewhere and was good to go all day next day. No pain wore out feeling or shakiness at all. 6 days later at about hour 5 of 6 hrs started to feel like getting cold chills and the pain while getting ink was a little more going over same areas as previous work. All in all glad i did it that way wasn't walking around for a long time with puzzle piece looking arm.

I just did 8 hours on my ribs/chest. Most painful experience I had ever felt. Literally teeth chattering, cold and exhausted. The ribs is a completely different level of pain, especially 8 hours.

I have pretty much tattooed my whole body, I started with 2-3 hours sessions and found them ok. As of last year I upped my sessions to 8-10 hour sittings and found them ok. After 4 hours the pain starts to hit, after the 6th hour time fly's and I stop feeling pain. I have had 3 10 hour sessions before 3 days in a row and my ink has healed perfectly. As long as you let your tattoo artist go for breaks (as he/she needs to) and you make sure you eat and drink a sugary drinks throughout the tattoo- you'll be find

Just sat for 7 hours (Was set for 5 and went long). Sat like a champ for the first 6 hours or so. Was getting a 3/4 sleeve (outer half). During the last hour I got shakes and super cold in my hands and feet. Thus was followed by cold sweats and nausea with a feeling of about to pass out. I have multiple tattoos and thus is the first time thus has happened to me. I got something to drink and a piece of gum and immediately felt better so we went on. My artist said it was a bloood sugar drop. It's now been 2 hours since completing the session and I feel fi e other than me feet being like ice cubes. I guess we will see how this goes. But I won't sit for a session that long again without being prepared with snacks Nd stuff.

Maybe I'm super human (or just female).. I have sat for 3.5 hour and 5.5 session on my back and 3 x 4 hour session on my thigh and none of these symptoms occurred with me. I ate before hand, kept Gatorade with me to drink throughout, and mostly..got my mind right, accepting the pain but don't focus on it.. Talk to your artist other people in the shop.. Listen in on conversations, it's will distract you. For me, getting tatooed is a form of release and self determination and a lesson in acceptance. But I will say, the body can only handle so much stress..each person is different on the level of acceptance of stress.

First experience of tattoo flu for me today. I always sit long (4+ hours) because I like intricate work and I have a pain tolerance like woah. Longest was 9 hours and I was fine if not a bit goofy that night. Yesterday my bicep was attacked for 6 hours and I feel like crap. The difference? I kept my blood sugar up during the tattoo but I didn't eat when I got home (crashed hard). BIG mistake.

Did a 6 hour session yesterday and was fine for about 5 of it. Im the process of finishing up my arm sleeve! Of course there were small breaks here and there. The last hour i felt completely like tapping out. My body was just done, i was getting shaky at that point. It didn't even hurt in the area he was doing last but still, i guess it was just too much. I had even packed a banana and oatmeal to eat during.
So I was super tired last night and had body aches! I also woke up with a migraine this morning so i'm just going to relax all day. It takes a lot out of you!

I just finished a 7-8 hour session with some small breaks here and there. i became nauseous towards the last 30 minutes. The piece is in the center of my back. i don't have any "tips" or "tricks" to make it through, really... if it's your first piece you'll probably be anxious about the pain. that is THE WORST thing you can do - fight it. it takes energy to bare the pain, fighting the pain takes double the energy, because you have to receive it it but it's like your trying not to. it's a bad time. you have to make room for the pain. don't fight it, but don't pretend it isn't painful. it is, and it's fine to be affected by it. relaxing is the best option. if you try too hard to enter a meditative mode you're using too much energy fighting the mode your body is in - pain. find an artist you can be cool with, conversation is immensely distracting. sometimes when we were talking i didn't feel anything. then i realized how distracted i was. i think it has something to do with the pain your body is feeling, and honest social connection is love, so when you're sitting their getting needled your body's like fuuuuck but then you share nice conversation and your body's like "oh, that's nice". don't try too hard to do anything, tho. go with how you feel. if it's a cold place, bring a heating pad. if you like to squeeze things when you're stressed, bring a ball. mostly find an artist you're comfortable with.

I also felt similar during my 6hr session. cold and drowsy feeling, but that's also quite a long time to sit in one spot. your body is inactive which can make you cold and sleepy. plus your your brain senses your skin is being "attacked" so your body is trying to fight foreign substances(ink and needles) so while your body is tired and cold from not moving, it is also using energy to fight. that's my guess. I also have a high pain tolerance but we have to be careful and make sure we dont pass out. high pain tolerance can act as a double edge sword if we're not careful.😅

I found this thread helpful so figured I would comment. I just did a 4 hour session, it was my first tattoo. I got through it pretty well without too much pain, but as soon as I got done and stood up I passed out for a second and got uncontrollably shakey. The artist got me a coke to drink and after lying down for 15 minutes I felt ok, just drained as if I had ran for 4 hours. I would do a 4 hour tattoo again, but I would bring something to eat and sugary drinks to sip on throughout.
